Build your list! It’s honestly one of the most important things you can and should do for your business. Some people put it off because they aren’t sure they understand the process. It’s true that there are a lot of moving parts.

I promise you that it’s not as difficult as you might be thinking to get started with list building. I think it’s really helpful to understand the different parts individually and then you can make sense of how they work together.

The basic set up of a list building funnel include the lead magnet or the reason for people to join your list. The opt-in form where people will physically sign up for your list. The squeeze page where the freebie is given away and the opt-in form is placed. The offer you might show people that’s perfectly in line with what you know they need and want. And it includes the autoresponder messages and broadcast messages you’ll send to your list.

Figure out the different components that go into list building and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a successful email marketer.

Also, people sometimes have parts of a list building funnel set up but they’ve never set up a full list building funnel. If that describes you, then this could be a turning point for you. Get a full funnel set up and it could make a huge difference for you and your business.

Your Lead Magnet

Let’s talk about why people might join your list. They aren’t going to join just because you have an opt-in form up. They aren’t going to join just because you really want them to and know you have a newsletter they might enjoy. Unless you already have some sort of relationship with them, they just aren’t going to join. There are lots of other lists out there and lots of other things to read and do. People are overwhelmed.

So, you have to give people a reason to sign up for your list. This reason should be so good that people will sign up whether they’re familiar with you or not.

People love to get things for free. If someone can get something for free by signing up for your list that they would otherwise pay for, they’ll be a lot more likely to hand over their email address. It’s exciting to get something for free that’s exactly what you needed and wanted.

Put yourself in the shoes of your audience when you’re brainstorming ideas for your freebie. What do they need and want? Do some research. Figure out what people are paying for and really excited about in your niche right now. You can create something that will be really enticing for your audience.

You can create a report, ebook, course, or something like that. It doesn’t have to be anything too difficult or time consuming to create. It just has to be exciting for your audience.

Once you create this freebie offer, it will act as a magnet for leads. People will be drawn to sign up for your list.

The Opt-In Form

Your opt-in form is where people will physically sign up for your list. You’ll get this form via your autoresponder company—like AWeber or GetResponse.

It will generally have a place for people to enter their name and email address, though you can adjust which fields it contains.

You’ll have an opt-in form on your squeeze page for sure—if not more.

I also recommend you have an opt-in form on every page of your blog or website. The more spots you have your opt-in form, the better.

You can also place a small amount of text that details your lead magnet, what people are getting for free. Many marketers also choose to put a privacy notice there and things of that nature.

Squeeze Page

I’ve mentioned your squeeze page already and that’s a very important part of the process. Your squeeze page is a page that’s designed to get people to sign up for your list.

Generally, it acts as a really concise “sales page” for your lead magnet. It typically contains a headline, bullet points, a short paragraph or two, and possibly your picture and sign-off.

This page is the start of the relationship you’ll develop with those who sign up for your list. They should get a sense of who you are, even if you don’t really write about yourself much or at all on this page. They’ll see that you’re someone of authority who’s giving them something for free that will really help them.

Your squeeze page really should focus on the benefits the person who will download your freebie offer will receive. Why should they hand over their email address? Make the offer and the squeeze page text so good that people who you’re targeting don’t want to leave the page without signing up.

After someone signs up for your list, you can choose to present an offer. This can be an offer that is very highly related to the freebie they have just signed up for.

Don’t present something just because you want to try to earn money. It should be something that will really help people—an offer you feel good about presenting.

You can also choose to present an offer later, after the relationship has started to develop a bit. You can present the offer in a broadcast email, autoresponder email, or whatever works for you.

Don’t be shy about presenting an offer to your list. Actually, right after someone has gotten something for free from you is a good time to present an offer.

Autoresponder Messages

It’s a good idea to load your autoresponder account up with autoresponder messages. These are messages that go out to your list subscribers during intervals that you set ahead of time.

It’s important that you use your autoresponder messages to build a relationship with your audience. You want to be the authority they turn to first.

You can review products and recommend products via your autoresponder messages as well.

You can give people additional freebies.

Think about the things other list marketers do that you really enjoy and respond to. Test different things and see what works for your audience.

Broadcast Messages

Sometimes, you’ll want to send emails to your list that aren’t in your autoresponder. These are messages that are more of the moment.

You can send information, links to posts and articles you’ve written, and offers.

Broadcast messages are important because they help people feel connected to you. They’re also a great avenue for making sales.

List Building Should be a Part of Everything You Do

List building is so important—you should really have all of these parts in place.

Build your list when you sell products. Build your list when you drive traffic. Get people to join your list via your blog posts and articles and everything else. Direct people to your squeeze page, which features your lead magnet.

These are the different components of list building that you can get up and running today.

Take stock of the list building components you’re currently making use of. Develop a plan and create a schedule for yourself to get the missing pieces up and running.

Paying attention to the different components of email marketing and list building is one of the most important things you can do for your business.
